# What is OpenAgents

OpenAgents is an open network of agents you work with through one
conversation, from anywhere: this website, your phone, or a terminal. Ask a
question, plan some work, or ask for a code change, and each message goes to
whichever agent, model, or computer in the network serves it best.

## What you can do with it

- **Chat.** Ask about OpenAgents, about your project, or about anything
else. Many answers come at once from our prepared answers and product
  notes. See [Chat](/docs/chat).
- **Hand work to Coder.** When a message is coding work, Coder, our coding
agent, does it on your own computer, with the coding agents you already
use there: Codex, Claude Code, Grok Build, OpenCode, or Devin. See
  [Coder](/docs/coder).
- **Add plugins.** A plugin is anything you add to OpenAgents. You can make
one, test whether it helps Coder, and publish the result so other people
  can check it. See [Plugins](/docs/plugins).
- **Earn XP in the Gym.** Checking other people's results and having your
plugin adopted earns XP. See [The Gym and XP](/docs/gym-and-xp).

## One chat, every surface

| Where | What it is |
| --- | --- |
| [openagents.com](/docs/website) | Start a chat from the homepage. |
| [OpenAgents for Mac](/docs/mac) | Chats, Coder on your Mac, the Verse, the Map, and decks. It also connects your phone to your Mac. |
| [OpenAgents for iPhone](/docs/iphone) | Chats, Coder on your computers, the Verse, and a bitcoin wallet. |
| [OpenAgents Terminal](/docs/terminal) | The same chat full screen in a terminal, with Coder in the folder you start from. |
| [The `openagents` command](/docs/cli) | Chat, settings, plugins, and pairing from a shell or a script. |

On a computer, your chats are the same chats in the Mac app, the Terminal,
and the `openagents` command, and a phone connected to that computer sees
them too.

## Open, all the way down

OpenAgents runs on open protocols: messages, results, and XP are signed
records on Nostr, an open network of relays. The app, the chat service,
Coder, and the protocols are open source at
[github.com/OpenAgentsInc/openagents](https://github.com/OpenAgentsInc/openagents),
under the Apache License 2.0. The apps need no account or password: each
device makes its own key the first time it runs.

Why we built it this way is in two essays:
[The Return of the General Agent](https://github.com/OpenAgentsInc/openagents/blob/main/docs/essays/2026-10-01-the-return-of-the-general-agent.md)
and
